Landing and care

Viburnum is not very demanding on growing conditions. In nature, the shrub grows in places with a large amount of moisture, in household plots the best growth is observed on drier soil. The soil must be prepared, as for other plants. It is also important to choose the right place with a low level of groundwater.

Experienced gardeners are advised to grow viburnum from seeds. They must be selected from the best berries, which are determined by the shape, size, taste, number of fruits from one bush. Seeds are planted in the nursery in the fall in the year of their collection, but you need to wait a long time for seedlings to appear. Next summer, a small root will be visible, and the seed itself will come out to the surface of the soil, and only after winter will the sprouts begin to grow in height.

If necessary, accelerate the cultivation of viburnum using the stratification method. Seeds are placed in a nylon bag and then placed in moistened sawdust. The seeds are stored in this form for two months at a temperature of + 21 ° C. Then they are placed in a cool place with an air temperature of no higher than + 5 ° C for 1 month. Ready seedlings are planted in the ground. So seedlings are formed. They grow to 8 cm and have 2 leaves on the trunk. In early May, seedlings are placed in the nursery, and they are planted in open ground the following year in spring. Did you know? Kalina has one unique feature - her bones have a heart shape.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to increase the number of viburnum shrubs in your area. For this, layering or cuttings are prepared. They are harvested in the middle of summer. The shoots are cut with the help of a secateurs, the cuttings are divided into several segments, the leaves are removed from the bottom and half of the top. The cuttings are tied together and dipped in a 10% heteroauxin solution, immersing the cuttings no more than 2 cm into the solution. After 10-15 hours, the cuttings are removed from the solution, washed with water and planted in greenhouses.

When processing cuttings, heteroauxin must not be allowed to fall on the leaves, as this will damage the growth of the plant.

Cuttings in open ground are planted 3-4 m from each other, in soil enriched with humus. To protect the roots and ensure their good development, plants need to be planted in holes 60 cm deep and 80 cm wide. When landing, the pits are filled with soil, after which they are shed in large quantities with water.
