Spraying grapes with baking soda

Grapes are quite troublesome to grow. It requires a lot of attention, the right choice of place, competent landing and care. The mandatory procedures for the cultivation of this berry culture include preventive and therapeutic treatments for diseases and harmful insects. Many winegrowers prefer to avoid the use of "chemistry", so they use available folk remedies, for example - soda or iodine, which this article is about.

What helps soda

Cultivation of grapes is a pleasant, but at the same time time consuming task. Undoubtedly, each owner of the vineyard wants the result of his efforts to become a rich, tasty and environmentally friendly crop. Unfortunately, grapes often suffer from various diseases and attacks of harmful insects.

It is better not to bring to such problems, but to prevent their occurrence, therefore preventive and therapeutic spraying become an important procedure for caring for the plant. A popular tool used to process grape bushes is soda.

Its properties allow you to fight at the initial stage with diseases such as gray rot, oidium, and drive away caterpillars, wasps from grapes.

Such treatments are good in that they, unlike chemicals, can be used at any stage of the development of the bushes, even during fruit ripening and active fruiting.

Did you know? The first information on obtaining soda by evaporating water from soda lakes is contained in the essay of the Roman physician Pedania Dioscorides "On Medicinal Substances." Its composition was not known until the XVIII century.

Gray rot

The appearance of gray rot on grapes represents a serious test for the owner of the vineyard. It is excited by the fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers., Which settles in plant remains and is activated in conditions of high humidity, thickened plantings. The varieties that produce berries with sugar levels above 15% are especially at risk.

Signs of gray rot infection:

  • brown spots with a gray coating on the leaves;
  • drying and falling of leaves;
  • necrosis of tree shoots;
  • brown staining and necrosis of inflorescences;
  • withering and drying of grapes.

Powdery Mildew (Oidium)

Oidium is a fungal disease that quite often affects grapes planted in a poorly harvested area with soil contaminated with pathogens littered with weeds in dense plantings. Most often, it develops if the winter was warm and humid.

The primary infection with powdery mildew passes unnoticed by humans. When signs of the disease appear, it indicates that it has reached the second stage. A characteristic symptom of the development of oidium is a gray-silver coating on berries, leaves, shoots.

The aerial part seems to be covered with flour or ash. The first plaque covers the upper leaf plates. In the future, the berries crack. They lose their sweetness and become acidic, therefore unsuitable for consumption.

Did you know? For a long time, scientists tried to make soda artificially. Often the experiments were dangerous and ended tragically. So, when mixing sodium nitrate with coal, the scientist Marggraf from the explosion received burns to his hands and face.

A threat to grapes is represented by insects whose larvae feed on leaves and shoots. This - leafworm, leaf beetle, mining moth, mosquito, weevils, goldfish, woodworm. The young generation of these insects is able to multiply in the shortest possible time and lead to the death of entire vine plantations.

Usually it is easier to get rid of beetles and butterflies themselves than from their voracious caterpillars. Characteristic signs that indicate the presence of these pests on plants are openings on the leaves and gnawed areas on the shoots. As a result, ground organs soon turn yellow, dry and die.

Wasps cause great damage to crops. They spoil the berries by gnawing their skin and eating the flesh. After spoilage, grapes become a delicacy for different flies, which finally make the crop unusable, mining them with their excrement and eggs.

Prevention of wasps should begin in August, when the berries have reached technical maturity. Even the presence of several individuals on the site should alert, as soon the sweet and fragrant berries will attract the attention of a whole swarm.

In addition to diseases and pests, with the help of soda you can deal with another problem - weeds. Weed herbs are also capable of causing enormous damage to vineyards. They do not allow the vines to fully receive the much-needed sunlight, and also take away vital nutrients from the plant.

If the owner of the vineyard wants to reduce the time spent on weeding, he can use soda spraying, which allows you to effectively control weeds.

Important! Soda treatments should be started immediately when the first symptoms appear. If the disease has reached an advanced stage, and pests have settled on vines en masse, only soda will not help.

What soda to use

For the processing of grape bushes apply baking soda. Soda ash is not suitable for these purposes. The necessary powder can be purchased at any grocery store or supermarket. Most often, it is located on an adjacent shelf with table salt.

Depending on the symptoms, a solution is prepared from the powder according to a special recipe. How much soda should be added to the solution will depend on the purpose of its use.

How to spray grapes with soda

Only correctly carried out spraying will allow you to save the crop in case of illness or pest invasion.

Application rules

To achieve the effect of the use of soda solution, it is necessary to adhere to the following rules:

  1. Carry out several treatments (at least 5) with an interval of a week.
  2. Spraying is carried out in cloudy weather when there is no precipitation.
  3. Add soap or vegetable oil to the soda solution, which will help delay the product on the ground organs of the plant.
  4. Efficiency increases when using soda solutions with the addition of potassium permanganate.

Soda solutions for feeding and killing pests

Here are some effective recipes you can cook yourself:

  1. Against gray rot. Combine the following ingredients: soda (5 tbsp. L.), Liquid soap (20 ml), water (10 l). Pour into a sprayer and process leaves and shoots.
  2. Against oidium: Dissolve 40 g of baking soda in 10 l of water and add 40 g of laundry soap. 2 tbsp. l add soda to 5 l of water, mix, pour 5 tbsp. l liquid soap and 75 ml of vegetable oil.
  3. Against the caterpillars. Combine soda and flour in equal parts. Use as a powder.
  4. Against weeds. Prepare a soda solution of 10 tbsp. l soda, 10 liters of water, 1 drop of liquid soap, 1 tbsp. l vegetable oil. Use it to water the soil 3 times per season.
  5. For rejuvenation of bushes. Prepare a mixture of soda (1 tsp), Epsom (1 tsp), ammonia (0.5 tsp), water (10 l).

Benefit or harm

As evidenced by the reviews of experienced winegrowers, in addition to combating some ailments, insect parasites and weeds, soda can be used for other purposes:

  • to increase the sugar level in fruits;
  • to improve the taste;
  • to rejuvenate the plant;
  • to reduce the acidity of the soil.

Soda solutions can cause harm in case of uncontrolled use or dosage changes. When watering with such a means of soil, you need to be prepared that the alkali level will increase in it, so it is not used on alkaline soils.

What else can I use

In addition to soda solutions, other safe means are also used for processing grape bushes - iodine, a solution of potassium permanganate.

Grape iodine

Iodine treatments are effective for damage by gray rot. To prepare the solution, 1 ml of iodine and 1 liter of water are mixed. It will take 2 treatments - when the grapes become the size of a pea, and during their ripening.

Another option is to mix 1 ml of iodine with 1 liter of serum. Such a solution is applied repeatedly at intervals of a week.

Iodine is also used for spraying against one of the most common and dangerous diseases of grapes - mildew. They fight it with a mixture of iodine (19 drops), Trichopolum (9 tablets), water (9 l). This solution is used for prevention. Treatments are made every 11 days.

The use of iodine allows not only to get rid of diseases, but also to feed berry bushes with this important element in order to accelerate the ripening of the crop.

The use of potassium permanganate

A solution of potassium permanganate is used to protect against harmful insects, powdery mildew, and also as a fertilizer in combination with boric acid. However, this tool can only be used on soils with a neutral and slightly alkaline reaction.

When processing from oidium, 5 g of potassium permanganate is dissolved in 10 l of water. Such spraying can be done after the ripening of the berries. However, after harvesting, chemical treatments will be necessary.

Important! When applying a solution of potassium permanganate, you must clearly follow the dosage. Uncontrolled use of the product can lead to degeneration of grapes, a decrease in its resistance to diseases and a decrease in yield.

So, ordinary baking soda can be successfully used for processing vineyards in order to prevent and treat various diseases and dangerous insects. This is an effective and safe tool that allows you to save and improve the taste of the crop.
