The main diseases of sheep and lambs: descriptions, characteristic signs, treatment

Today sheep breeding is a very popular, demanded and financially profitable agricultural direction. However, in the process of raising animals, many farmers may encounter various diseases that affect individual individuals or even a whole herd. In order to prevent the death of animals, you should know what are the most common ailments of sheep, and how to recognize them by the first symptoms.

Sheep diseases and their symptoms, treatment, prevention

Diseases affecting sheep negatively affect not only the general health of animals, but also adversely affect their productive qualities, growth, and fertility.

There are traditional ailments, for example, rabies or helminthiasis, as well as diseases of a specific nature - bradzot or agalactia. Consider their main symptoms, methods of treatment and prevention.

Did you know? Sheep belong to the category of those few animals that have pupils of a rectangular shape. In addition, experiments have confirmed that animals have excellent memory.

Non-communicable diseases

It is advisable to start the description of the first group of the most common diseases of sheep with non-communicable diseases that are not transmitted to other individuals through direct contact. As a rule, such ailments are caused by disturbances in the digestive system. The most effective treatment will be in the early stages.

Flatulence of the scar

Flatulence of the scar is considered one of the most affected diseases in sheep. It appears due to violations of the rules of feeding animals, as well as due to poor-quality feed.

Digestion Features of Sheep:

The pancreas and abomasum of milk lamb (a) and adult sheep (b): 1 - the vestibule of the scar; 2 - scar; 3 - mesh; 4 - book; 5 - abomasum

As a result of prolonged malnutrition, one of the intestinal scars ceases to function normally, which leads to the appearance of such symptoms:

  • increased sheep nervousness and anxiety;
  • refusal of food, loss of appetite;
  • bloating, increased gas formation;
  • hardening of the abdomen.

In the early stages of flatulence, in order to cure a ram, they put a special tube in his mouth, which allows you to remove gases and normalize the functioning of the scar.

If it was not possible to alleviate the condition through a tube, then a minimally invasive surgical intervention is practiced - puncture of the scar with special tools.

Poisoning and Paronychia

Poisoning is a common ailment that farmers often face. The causes of intoxication of the body can be different, but most often, they are associated with animals eating poisonous plants during grazing on pastures.

You can recognize poisoning by the following signs:

  • the appearance of diarrhea;
  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite and refusal of food;
  • increase in body temperature.

Poisoning is especially dangerous for lambs, because their fragile body can sometimes not cope with harmful substances and toxins. Therefore, at the slightest suspicion of intoxication, appropriate measures must be taken.

An effective method of treating poisoning is gastric lavage with a solution consisting of 100 ml of vegetable oil and 50 g of salt per 0.5 liter of water.

No less pleasant is paronychia - a disease that affects the animal’s hooves and causes severe inflammation, swelling and even rot. The sick sheep begins to limp, feels severe pain when moving. To rid the animal of discomfort, you should slightly cut the hoof.

White muscle disease of lambs

The white muscle disease of lambs is one of the most terrible pathologies that causes dystrophy of skeletal and muscle tissues. Unfortunately, it is not subject to therapy and causes mortality in almost 60% of cases. The reason for the development of dystrophy in lambs is considered to be normal vitamin deficiency, that is, a lack of vitamins and mineral components: E, cobalt, phosphorus, copper, manganese, selenium.

The signs of white muscle disease are as follows:

  • lameness;
  • general weakness of the body;
  • edema;
  • frequent cramps;
  • rapid breathing.

It is very important to prevent the described disease. For this, vitamin E is regularly given to adult animals and pregnant females, and mineral and vitamin supplements are included in the diet.

Nooar disease

Non-ovarian disease does not belong to the category of infectious, as it is not contagious. An ailment is expressed in eating one's own wool, as a result of which, a large amount of wool accumulates in the stomach, which does not overdo.

This happens because sheep eat poor-quality feed.

As a rule, an ailment is accompanied by such symptoms:

  • moaning;
  • nervous condition;
  • decreased appetite, refusal of food.

To alleviate the condition of the patient, resort to mechanical cleansing of the stomach. However, in most cases, the treatment does not have the desired effect, and the surgeon has to be involved.

Ketosis

Ketosis is a common type of ailment that is caused by disturbances in protein-carbohydrate metabolism.

Most often susceptible females are susceptible to ketosis.

It is characterized by symptoms:

  • digestive tract disorder;
  • loss of appetite and weight;
  • hair loss;
  • rapid breathing, heart rhythm disturbance;
  • general lethargy, weakness and apathy;
  • loss of coordination and cramps;
  • constipation or acute diarrhea.

An ailment develops due to an unbalanced diet, poor-quality food, prolonged fasting, or due to eating a large number of concentrates. For the treatment of sheep, it is necessary to balance the diet, supplement it with vegetables, root crops, as well as artificial additives based on vitamins A and E. Also, in the treatment of animals they are given injections with insulin and glucose.

Did you know? Sheep have a very delicate, keen ear. A newborn lamb can distinguish the voice of its mother from a large number of females.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a very serious, serious illness of the respiratory tract, the accompanying factors of its occurrence are:

  • drafts in the room where the sheep live;
  • increased humidity and dampness in the shepherd;
  • unsanitary conditions;
  • premature grooming of animals in the cold season.

Predominantly, young animals and newborn lambs are susceptible to pneumonia, which have weak immunity and are not able to fully combat various viruses, bacteria and infections.

You can recognize pneumonia by the following symptoms:

  • a sharp increase in body temperature indicators up to 41–42 C;
  • drowsiness, apathy, lethargy, general weakness;
  • the release of a large amount of mucus from the sinuses;
  • shortness of breath, shortness of breath;
  • dry cough.

In the case of diagnosing pneumonia, treatment should be started immediately. The veterinarian prescribes antibiotic drugs: streptocide, neomycin, sulfonamide, etc.

Infectious diseases

Infectious diseases are more dangerous for livestock, since not only one individual, but the entire livestock can become infected with them.

The causative agents of these diseases are most often:

  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • fungal spores;
  • simple microorganisms.

Most diseases of the infectious type are not amenable to therapy, while the animal is sent for slaughter. Some ailments require treatment with antibiotics of a certain group.

Important! Infectious diseases spread very quickly and are more difficult to treat.

Listeriosis

Listeriosis is caused by bacterial microorganisms, which are highly survivable in the environment. The disease is characterized by damage to the nervous system (meningoencephalitis), genitals (miscarriages, metritis), udder (mastitis). If the disease affects the nervous system, then the sheep are doomed to 100% death.

Symptoms that accompany listeriosis:

  • complete rejection of feed and water;
  • partial paralysis, seizures;
  • loss of coordination of movements.

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no cure for listerosis. Therefore, the only possible solution to the problem is to slaughter the animal in order to rid it of suffering and excruciating pain. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to vaccinate sheep.

Smallpox

Smallpox is especially difficult for sheep to carry, in particular, young animals. Many of the diseased individuals do not survive.

Signs that your pet has contracted smallpox include:

  • increased body temperature
  • partial baldness of the coat;
  • excessive salivation;
  • mucous discharge from the nasal passages;
  • exhaustion of the body;
  • loss of appetite;
  • swelling of the eyelids;
  • characteristic rashes in the form of a rash and vesicles.

At the first symptoms of the disease, the infected individual is isolated. Therapy consists in taking antibiotic drugs, however, often it does not give positive results. If no progress has been made, then the animals are euthanized, and their bodies are burned. An effective method of preventing smallpox is vaccination.

Bradzot

Bradzot belongs to the category of diseases that are characteristic of sheep. The causative agent is anaerobic bacillus, which causes inflammation of the abomasum and duodenum, and, as a result, severe intoxication of the body.

Important! Bradzot develops at an extremely high speed, so an infected animal must be isolated from others as soon as possible.

A sheep or a ram can become infected by direct contact with an infected individual or through grass on pastures, if the stick is in the soil, which is very common.

The disease is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • increased flatulence;
  • loss of coordination;
  • cramps
  • gnashing of teeth.

The mortality rate for infection with bradzot is 100%. There is no cure for today. To prevent infection, vaccinate the herd.

Hyperplasia

Hyperplasia or pulmonary adenomatosis is a viral disease that causes the growth of epithelial cells in the respiratory tract.

In this case, the following symptoms are observed:

  • severe dry cough;
  • rapid breathing;
  • foaming nasal discharge;
  • critical weight loss.

It is almost impossible to cure an animal of hyperplasia. All that can be done is to isolate the sick sheep and euthanize it.

Important! When diagnosing pulmonary adenomatosis, it is imperative to inform the appropriate authorities of the veterinary service to register the case.

Infectious mastitis

Infectious mastitis is a very dangerous ailment that affects the mammary organ of animals. It is caused by staphylococcus and is manifested by severe inflammation of the udder, which, if untreated, passes into gangrene.

Only females are infected during lactation.

Infection is accompanied by:

  • fever;
  • inflammation of the mammary organ and the presence of purulent discharge from it;
  • compaction and redness of the udder;
  • the disappearance of chewing gum.

In most cases, poor, unsanitary conditions for keeping animals lead to the formation of mastitis. They treat the disease with antibiotics and sulfonamides, creolin is also used. If the female is ill again, then inflammation and abscesses are removed surgically.

Did you know? For the first time, sheep were domesticated about 7 thousand years ago in the territory of the modern Turkish Republic.

Agalactia

A dangerous "complement" of infectious mastitis is agalactia, a disease that causes the bacteria Mycoplasma. Infection affects the mammary glands, joints and eyes in lactating and coarse females. The latter often have spontaneous abortions.

Agalactia manifests itself during delivery or after childbirth with the following symptoms:

  • conjunctivitis;
  • elevated body temperature to 41–42 ° C;
  • inflammation of the udder;
  • discharge of pus from the nipples;
  • color change of milk;
  • decreased appetite.

Mortality in this disease is about 45%. Therapy is based on the use of tetracycline antibiotics.

Enterotoxemia

Enterotoxemia, caused by an anaerobic clostridia, adversely affects the nervous system, leads to intoxication of the body. The disease is considered seasonal and most actively manifests itself in the spring. It is characterized by several stages: acute, super-acute, subacute and chronic.

Only the subacute stage can be treated, which can be recognized by:

  • copious saliva in sheep;
  • secretion of mucus from the nasal passages;
  • rapid breathing;
  • disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), for example, constipation or diarrhea;
  • yellowing of the mucous membranes;
  • disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Therapy is carried out using broad-spectrum antibiotic drugs or hyperimmune serum.

We advise you to familiarize yourself with the rules for vaccinating sheep.

Foot and mouth disease

Foot and mouth disease is one of the most dangerous diseases, which is characterized by a rapid pace of spread and high susceptibility . During the development of foot and mouth disease, vesiculate inflammation is formed on the body of the animal - aphthae, erosion forms on the mucous membranes, udder and in the gap between the hooves.

The causative agent of foot and mouth disease is an aftovirus, which is highly resistant to environmental conditions and, under conditions comfortable for it, can live in the soil for up to two years. A sheep can become infected from another infected animal or virus carrier, from infected instruments, through saliva or milk. Foot and mouth disease has 7 forms.

At the same time, having overcome a virus of one type, the animal develops immunity to it, but this does not exclude the likelihood of infection with a virus of another type.

The ailment has characteristic symptoms:

  • increase in body temperature;
  • the formation of aphthae on the mucous membranes and other organs;
  • spontaneous abortion in pregnant females.

Treatment for foot and mouth disease is based on local and general therapy. Erosion is treated with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate. Of the drugs, the animal is injected with a glucose solution, antibiotic solutions and drugs are used to maintain the heart.

Rabies

Rabies is classified as an acute, contagious viral disease in which the central nervous system of animals suffers. Unfortunately, an infected sheep expects an extremely fatal outcome.

The danger of the disease lies in the fact that the virus, which is the primary source of rabies, has a high immunity to the external environment, resistant to elevated air temperatures, is not afraid of alkalis and acids.

It spreads rapidly throughout the herd, and can also be transmitted even to humans. Symptoms associated with rabies vary, depending on the form of the disease.

Important! The only possible prevention of rabies is vaccination.

The quiet form is characterized by:

  • constant mooing of sheep;
  • the release of a large amount of saliva;
  • unbalanced gait;
  • refusal of feed;
  • partial paralysis.

The violent form is accompanied by:

  • increased aggression towards dogs;
  • regular attempts to escape from a leash;
  • causeless head bangs against the wall.

As a treatment for the disease, the infected individual is isolated and killed. Medicines for the described disease do not exist.

Tuberculosis

Another dangerous ailment is tuberculosis, the development of which provokes mycobacteria, which is characterized by good resistance to elevated temperatures and disinfectants.

As a result of the development of the disease, the body of the sheep inside and outside is covered with small tubercles, which later turn into dead tissue.

Tuberculosis is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • lethargy and weakness of the body;
  • animals begin to cough violently;
  • profuse diarrhea appears;
  • the lymph nodes near the udder become inflamed and enlarge.

Unfortunately, modern methods of treating tuberculosis do not have the proper effectiveness, so infected individuals are sent for slaughter.

Parasitic diseases

Ailments of a parasitic or invasive nature are caused by various parasites, in particular helminths, ticks, arachnids, pest larvae, etc. Common problems that are caused by parasites are scabies, trichodectosis, various dermatitis, including purulent in nature.

Tick-borne encephalitis

Encephalitis is a dangerous viral disease caused by a tick. The first symptoms are characterized by a sharp increase in body temperature, general weakness and malaise, fever, partial loss of coordination.

After a few days, the symptoms disappear, but after the introduction of the virus into the cerebral cortex, the fever returns. In most cases, an infected individual is expected to die. If a sheep does not die a few days after being infected with encephalitis, then it has a high chance of self-healing.

Melophagosis

Melophagosis is a skin disease that occurs as a result of parasitism of a wingless fly.

Insects breed with great speed and lay eggs in the animal’s hair, which is why the disease rapidly spreads to other individuals.

Melophagosis has the following symptoms:

  • severe itching, in which the sheep peels off shreds of wool;
  • digestive upset;
  • weight loss;
  • decrease in sheep productivity.

Sick individuals are treated with special dusts of insecticides. The secondary procedure is carried out after three weeks. Sheep bathing after shearing in insecticidal baths is also widely used.

Helminthiasis

  • теряют аппетит;
  • ведут себя вяло;

  • частичная потеря шерсти;
  • расстройства пищеварительного тракта в виде запоров или диареи;
  • increase in body temperature
  • общая слабость и вялость;
  • loss of appetite;
  • anemia;

  • пропадет координация движения;
  • появляется агрессия или, наоборот, пугливость;
  • отсутствуют рефлексы;

Echinococcosis

  • резкое повышение температуры до 42°С;
  • пожелтение слизистых оболочек;
  • вялость, апатия, угнетённое состояние;
  • отказ от пищи и воды;
  • weight loss;

Did you know?

  • rabies;
  • foot and mouth disease;
  • фасциолёз;
  • катаральная лихорадка;
  • brucellosis.
