Kalina Buldenezh in landscape design

The name of the viburnum variety Boule de Neige is translated from French as “snow globe”. This name was given to the plant by the French breeder Lemoine, who was the first to describe this plant in detail, for large spherical inflorescences of white color. But in the court gardens, Buldenezh served as an ornament long before that, since the time of Catherine II. Gardeners and landscape designers still value culture for its combination of beauty and ease of cultivation.

Landing

Depending on the type of planting material, Buldenezh planted in spring, summer or autumn. Spring planting is optimal for propagation by layering, summer - by dividing the bush, autumn - by cuttings.

Important! Kalina Buldenezh is not recommended to be planted in cold damp weather.

Guelder-rose is unpretentious in leaving, but it is very exacting to growing conditions. She prefers flat areas without hills and hills near ponds . In addition, prolonged direct sunlight on the bush significantly reduces the abundance and flowering period. Therefore, it is better to plant a plant near buildings, trees or hedges that can create partial shade for it.

The soil should be lightweight, loose with medium acidity (pH 5.5–6.5). Heavy soil should be mixed with sand, very light - with clay, sour to extinguish with lime.

After determining the period, place and selection of seedlings, you can proceed to their planting.

  1. Dig a hole with a depth of 50 cm and a diameter of 60 cm. The plant develops a rather powerful root system of the surface type, so it needs a wide area of fertile soil for rooting. If there are several bushes, the distance between them should be at least two meters.
  2. At the bottom, make drainage from rubble or expanded clay.
  3. Prepare fertile soil by mixing the ground with two buckets of compost or humus, two glasses of wood ash and one glass of nitrophoska. Fill the hole with the mixture to half and form a small hill.
  4. Set the seedling and evenly distribute the roots.
  5. Fill the hole with soil so that the root collar plunges underground to a depth of 3 cm.
  6. Tamp the soil, forming a watering circle - a trench, 10-12 cm deep around the circumference of the hole and fill it with plenty of water.
  7. Mulch the area around the plant with peat or humus to prevent the soil from drying out.

Shrub care

To Buldenezh pleased with plentiful lush flowering, you must carefully follow all the recommendations for caring for it:

  • timely watering and top dressing;
  • loosening and mulching of the soil;
  • decorative and anti-aging trim;
  • protection against diseases and pests.

Did you know? Huge snow-white inflorescences of viburnum Buldenezh are completely odorless.

Watering and feeding

This variety of viburnum is very hygrophilous, therefore, it is preferable to plant it near water bodies: lakes, wells, fountains. If this is not possible, it is necessary to provide the plants with abundant watering, starting from early spring and ending in late autumn.

Do not allow the soil to dry out.

It is necessary to moisten the soil in a radical way, pouring water into a trench dug around a bush. After the sedimentation of the liquid, the moat should be filled up, the surface should be mulched.

Important! This culture is winter-hardy, but the superficial root system in winter can freeze. To avoid this, the last plentiful watering should be carried out in late autumn, after the onset of night frost.

Periodically, the ground under the bushes must be weeded in order to remove weeds and loosen the ground.

Buldenezh is fertilized twice during the growing season - at the end of April and in the middle of August with complex fertilizers for ornamental plants. The composition can be prepared independently:

  • for spring top dressing, 20 g of potassium are mixed with 40 g of nitrogen and 30 g of phosphorus per 1 m²;
  • in August, 40 g of potassium and 20 g of phosphorus are added to the same area.

Fertilizers are distributed on the surface, after which the soil is dug up with turning the formation to a depth of 10-12 cm

Pruning viburnum

To get a beautiful bush and large, plentiful inflorescences, Buldenezh is pruned annually from early spring to the end of July.

In the first year after planting, before the buds begin to swell, root shoots are cut at a level of 20 cm from the ground. In early August, it will be necessary to cut all branches, leaving 4-5 buds on each. This procedure improves branching, making the plant more luxuriant . In addition, you will need to remove all buds. It is important that a powerful root system is formed first. Therefore, the first flowering you can see only in the second vegetative season.

Important! In order to prevent infection and improve the “healing” of the slices, they need to be treated with a solution of copper sulfate, and then coated with an ordinary garden var.

By the tenth year, viburnum begins to need anti-aging pruning. To do this, cut off 1-2 of the oldest trunk and instead leave young root shoots. With proper timely care, Buldenezh will decorate a site of 60 years or more.

Starting from the second year and throughout life in the early spring, it is necessary to remove all broken, damaged, diseased and bent inward branches.

Decorative trim

You can give any shape to a decorative viburnum: a ball, a cube, a pyramid, etc. To do this, formative pruning is carried out in July, immediately after all the inflorescences have fallen. You can shorten both basal and lateral shoots. The culture tolerates any manipulations very well, does not get sick and does not require a recovery period .

From the beginning of August, the plant begins to lay buds for the next vegetative season, so it is not worth cutting any branches anymore.

Did you know? Buldenezh inflorescences are very heavy, they can bend branches to the ground and break them. To prevent this, with abundant flowering, you need to install props.

It can be the only decoration of the site, and can solo in various compositions or complement the general concept of parks and squares . Especially brides love this variety, wedding photos on their background turn out magnificent.

Such properties allow you to use it as a hedge along buildings, alleys, walkways. Under tall bushes and standard trees, benches are often set up, creating unique recreation areas.

To create compositions, landscape designers often plant Buldenezh along with simultaneously blooming lilacs and hydrangeas of different colors. Also, white balls shade dark green deciduous and coniferous crops well

Due to the fact that over the years, the branches of viburnum fall down, like a weeping willow, it is often planted near fountains and lakes. White balls reflected in the water surface look unsurpassed.

Stub formation

It is easy to form a standard buldeneg tree. Follow the description of the process and you will surely succeed:

  1. Immediately after planting, select one of the strongest basal shoots, cut off the rest closer to the neck.
  2. Do not touch the left trunk until it reaches 1.5–2 m (if you want to get a short tree, you can start forming a crown earlier). Constantly cut all the small shoots under the root.
  3. When the shtamb grows to the required height, cut off its top and remove all side branches below the level of crown formation. After that, the side branching will begin.
  4. Cut the first lateral shoots in a year, leaving 4-5 buds on each.
  5. Next, trim the crown, giving it the shape that you like.
