The chemical composition of beeswax

Beeswax as part of a cosmetic product helps prevent its separation into oil and liquid components. Simply put, it maintains its creamy consistency. It gives structure, providing smooth application and maintaining their hardness. In eye makeup products, wax gives structure. It does not harden, providing elasticity and ease of application. Thanks to this quality, waterproof mascara has appeared.

Beeswax is produced by working bees of the genus Apis . They synthesize it in the glands located in the abdominal segments and use it to create honeycombs. The product consists mainly of esters, fatty acids and various long chain alcohols.

In general, it is about:

  • 67% polyester;
  • 14% hydrocarbons;
  • 12% free acids;
  • 1% alcohols;
  • 6% of other ingredients.
In its chemical composition, it is a lipid with special physicochemical properties. It is characterized by an acid number in the range from 18 to 23, an ester number from 70 to 80, and a saponification number from 89 to 100. The color of the substance without impurities is white, but in practice it often varies from yellow to brown. The structure is fine-grained, ductile, non-sticky. The smell is similar to honey.
