Grape variety Talisman (Kesha-1)

Grapes Talisman (Kesha-1) has existed for about thirty years. The attitude towards him is twofold: he is quite satisfied with some, while others find a number of shortcomings in him and refuse to grow it. Nevertheless, its popularity is high, so let's get to know the variety better.

Variety Growing History

Kesha-1 was obtained in Novocherkassk, at the Research Institute of Viticulture. Initially, the varieties Frumoase Albe and Delight were crossed, resulting in Kesha. A variety of Kesha-1, which ripens a little later than its parent, was developed from it.

General Description of Talisman Grape Variety

As already mentioned, the variety is relatively late. Its growing season is 127–135 days. Harvesting usually falls at the beginning of September. Keshi-1 grape bush is large, tall. The vine grows to 4 m, its maturation is rapid. The vine is covered with large five-lobed foliage of strong dissection.

The bush is covered in clusters abundantly; 75% of the shoots are fruitful, and all of them are able to withstand the load of two clusters. When forming too large clusters, it is better to thin out them, as there can be a lot of “peas” - very small berries.

Did you know? In Greece there is a monument associated with grapes, but it is installed on a donkey. The thing is that this animal decided to feast on the vine while its owner was sleeping peacefully. Seeing what happened, the grower was very upset and punished the donkey, but what a surprise it was when the eaten bushes gave a wonderful harvest. The owner asked the animal for forgiveness on his knees, and since then it has been customary to cut the grapes.

Grape Features

Kesha-1 variety is distinguished by such features:

  1. The young bush ripens quickly (the next year after planting it gives the first brushes).
  2. The plant is frost-resistant (up to -25 ° C).
  3. Steadily before mildeu, rot.
  4. The number of clusters to escape is 1.4–1.8.
  5. Cuttings take root quickly and take root well in a new place.
  6. Brushes are stored on the bush for a long time.

Characteristic

To make a decision about growing, you should first study the characteristics of the flowers and berries of the plant.

Peduncles

The mascot has a functionally female flower (the pestle is well developed, and the stamens are weak), so it needs pollinators.

For Keshi-1, good pollinators are:

  • Kesha

  • White CoCl,

  • K-41,

  • Denal

  • Kuban .

These varieties are bisexual and have similar ripening dates.

Brushes

Bunches of Keshi-1 are large, weighing 0.8-1.1 kg, medium (rarely - high) friability. Their shape is conical or cylindrical-conical. Did you know? In Slovenia, in the city of Maribor, there is a 400-year-old vineyard that still produces crops. Every year he gathers berries for a hundred bottles of wine.

Berries

In a mature form, the berries are large, 12–16 g. Some specimens can weigh 20–25 g. In shape, they are round or oval, covered with a dense light green skin with a waxy coating. Under it is an elastic flesh with a sweet nutmeg taste, sourness is almost imperceptible. Seeds in a berry 1-3 and almost all of them are suitable for sowing.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety Talisman

  • Positive qualities of the variety:
  • stable and big crop;
  • large clusters and berries;
  • sweet in taste, almost without sourness;
  • the crop tolerates transportation well;
  • berries retain their appearance for a long time even on a bush;
  • good frost resistance;
  • above average disease resistance;
  • quick rooting of cuttings.

  • There is a negative side:
  • the crop must be normalized so that it is at the highest level;
  • berries like wasps;
  • vines need a large feeding area and strong supports.

Features of agricultural technology

Kesha-1 is not particularly demanding on the conditions of growth and care. For him, as for other varieties, the main thing is to choose the right place for planting, timely watering and pruning.

Seat selection

Grapes are a heat-loving and sun-loving plant, so you should choose a sunny place on a small hill (with a slope of no more than + 10 ° C) and be sure to be protected from drafts.

Ideal soil is chernozem or fertilized soil, but not marshland. The proximity of groundwater is also not suitable, since the plant does not tolerate root root locking.

Landing

Seedlings can be planted in autumn and spring, but it is better to carry out the procedure in April, especially not in the southern regions. Then the seedling will take root better, although it will give the first crop a little later.

The hole is prepared with a size of 60 × 60 cm. If more than one bush is planted, there must be at least two meters between them. A drainage layer is surely poured into the hole, unless the soil is sandy. Part of the earth extracted from the pit is mixed with compost. These preparatory work is ongoing in the fall. You can also bring a drip irrigation pipe into the hole and dig a support.

Gardeners also grow table grape varieties such as:

When planting, the seedling deepens well. Its roots are placed on a fertilized layer of earth, covered with clean soil from above and compacted, then irrigated abundantly.

Care for a young and mature vine

Young plants really need regular and plentiful watering - they need water for successful rooting, so you need to irrigate the soil so that it is saturated 35–40 centimeters deep. To do this, watering is carried out twice a week in the first month after planting; while a bush consumes a bucket of water. If the season is dry, then you need to pour 1.5–2 buckets per bush. Important! If the newly planted bush is not watered regularly or in insufficient quantities, the survival rate of the seedling will be significantly reduced. When the plant takes root, watering should be reduced. Now, before the next irrigation, you need to try the soil: if the 2-centimeter top layer has dried up, then you can water it, no - wait a couple of days.

Mulching the soil around the bush will not be superfluous - it will help to maintain soil moisture longer. For this, organic matter is used with a layer of 7-10 cm.

After watering, the soil loosens, but not deep - only the upper thin layer breaks. Weeds are removed as they grow in the near-stem circle.

Top dressing

Kesha-1 does not need special feeding - it will be enough for him to make wood ash, compost or chicken droppings. With nitrogen fertilizers, you need to be extremely careful, because if you add a lot of them, the plant will spend all its strength on the growth of green mass, and not on the formation of brushes.

Circumcision

Pruning can be done in the fall, after the leaves fall, or in the spring, before the sap flow begins. How to do it right:

  1. First of all, diseased and damaged shoots are cut off.
  2. Then the extra stepsons or shoots growing in the wrong place are removed.
  3. Then the remaining ones are shortened, with the preservation of no more than 7 eyes. In this case, the entire bush should be 32 buds.
  4. In the summer, a bush should also be formed - young extra shoots break off.
Important! If your region has a dry summer, it is better to leave one vine on each branch. So grapes have the strength to grow a good harvest.

Diseases and Pests

The variety Talisman (Kesha-1) was bred resistant to most diseases, so the only thing he needs is a spring preventive treatment with iron sulfate before the sap flow begins.

But what can cause troubles is the wasp - they are actively flocking to the sweet aroma of berries. Therefore, you need to timely destroy nearby hornet hives, hang baits and protect the clusters with a mesh bag.
