Grape variety "Pretty Woman"

Grape varieties created by amateur breeders have interesting names, often invented by originators based on their external characteristics. These grapes include grapes "Pretty Woman", which has attractive-looking clusters, as well as large, spectacular berries and ripens very early. Consider a detailed description of the variety and information on how to plant and grow it on your site.

Variety Growing History

"Pretty Woman" is the result of the selection work of amateur winegrower E. G. Pavlovsky. To get a new variety, he crossed “Victoria” with pollen from Amur grapes. Selection was carried out relatively recently - in 2004, but the variety quickly became popular and spread to different countries of the world.

Description of grape variety "Pretty Woman"

"Beauty" is attributed to early ripening table varieties, bushes are characterized by good ripening of shoots. Consider a detailed description of the appearance of the plant, as well as the main characteristics of the variety.

Characteristics

The bushes have an average growth force, the root system of the plant is multi-level, the lower roots lie quite deep. The leaves are large, have 3 or 5 lobes, saturated green. The flowers of the plant are bisexual, so there are no problems with pollination by neighboring bushes of another variety.

Bunches of grapes are cone-shaped, large, elongated, medium-soft. One bunch reaches a weight of 700 g, often larger ones are also found - up to 1300 g. The berries are oval, elongated, have an interesting color: the base is dark pink, smoothly turning into a purple top.

The weight of grapes on average is 10 g. The berries are covered with a strong thin shell, inside which contains a light dense and juicy pulp with a slight nutmeg smell. The taste of berries is balanced, sweet with a slight acidity, sugar content - 15%. There are very few seeds in the berries, not more than 2; quite often there are no seeds at all.

Did you know? Grapes is the first berry plant in the world that people began to cultivate - this period dates back to the 6th century BC. e.

Variety "Pretty Woman" has the following characteristics:

  • The period from budding to bunching is 105–115 days.
  • yield indicators are average;
  • frost resistance, declared by the originator, is –24 ° С (currently the variety is being tested for compliance with the declared indicators).

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

  • The advantages of "Beauty" include:
  • early ripening of fruits;
  • stable yield;
  • excellent taste of berries;
  • excellent external characteristics of bunches;
  • the ability to transport over long distances;
  • ability to withstand severe frosts.

  • Among the disadvantages of the variety are:
  • poor immunity to common diseases;
  • the tendency of berries to crack when untimely harvesting or waterlogging of the soil.

Table grapes also include Maradona, Asya, Kodryanka, Lydia, Typhi, Lily of the Valley.

Grape planting procedure

For good growth and high productivity, it is necessary to choose the right place and carry out the process of planting a seedling, so we will consider the information about this in more detail.

Seat selection

Grapes are photophilous plants, so the plantation where the seedling will be planted should be well lit all day. A suitable place for landing is the elevated part of the site, preferably protected by hedges from the north wind.

The lowland is not suitable for grape planting, since closely lying underground waters will regularly flood the bushes, which painfully respond to the constant overmoistening of the root system.

Important! If the variety will be grown in the northern region, then planting should be carried out along the fence or the wall of the building so that cold winds in the winter do not destroy the plants.

The soil for cultivating the variety does not play a big role - it grows well on loams, sandy loams, chernozems, gray soils. The main soil requirement is a slightly acidic or neutral reaction, good aeration and a thick layer of drainage.

You can successfully grow “Beauty” on sandy soil, which is regularly enriched with nitrogen. A good plant will feel on a rocky and gravelly type of soil.

Features of planting varieties

Before planting a seedling in the soil, it should be prepared. For this, the territory is dug up, lime soil is lime. If necessary, make manure or humus, impoverished soils should be fertilized with a complex of mineral fertilizers purchased in the store.

Soil preparation should be carried out in advance. Since the cultivar is recommended to be planted in spring, before buds open, it is better to prepare a place for planting in the fall, so that the manure will be over-grown and not burn the young roots.

Planting a seedling is carried out in pits with a depth of at least 50 cm to protect the roots of a young plant from freezing in winter. The width of the pit should be 80 cm. A distance of 1.2 m is maintained between the seedlings, and 3 m between the rows.

A drainage layer (15 cm) must be poured to the bottom of the pit - crushed stone or broken brick. The drainage is covered with fertile soil from above, a seedling is set so that the root neck is 6 cm immersed in the soil. The voids are filled with soil remaining from digging a hole. After planting, the plant is watered with plenty of water (20 l).

Variety Care Rules

The key to the health of any plant, its normal development and fruiting is quality care - grapes "Pretty Woman" are no exception, so consider the rules for the care of the variety.

How to water grapes

Watering a young plant is mandatory - in the first year after planting a seedling. On hot and dry summer days, daily watering with a small amount of water (up to 5 l) is recommended. With cloudy weather or regular rainfall, watering is reduced, moistening the soil 1 time per week.

In subsequent years, you need to water the plant during a period of drought and heat (it will be enough 20 l under the bush once a week). In addition, for abundant and high-quality fruiting, the procedure is recommended to be carried out during the period of active growth of shoots and the ovary of the fruit of the plant.

Important! The last watering should be carried out 2 weeks before the harvest ripens, otherwise it can be severely damaged - the berries will crack and rot.

Mulching

Mulch the soil around the grapes is recommended to preserve moisture, better aeration, protect against cracking of the surface and to prevent the rapid growth of weeds. Suitable mulch for grapes are sawdust, straw or humus. Prepared mulch is poured with a thick layer (up to 10 cm) around the plant, regularly pouring it after watering.

Feeding

Grapes are recommended to be fed every year in several stages:

  • 7 days before flowering, a humus solution (10 l of water per 2 kg of fertilizer) and a solution of mineral top dressing (nitrophoska - 65 g, boric acid - 7 g, water - 10 l) are introduced into the soil (under one bush);
  • 3 days before flowering, foliar top dressing (spraying) is carried out with purchased products - Plantafol, Aquamarine, Novofert, according to the instructions;
  • 14 days before the ovary of berries, the plant is fed with a solution of mineral fertilizers (ammonium nitrate - 20 g, ash - 180 g, water - 10 l);
  • during the period of active fruit ovary, organic matter is introduced (2 kg of mullein per 10 l of water) with mineral fertilizers (wood ash - 200 g, water - 10 l). Also sprayed with the same purchased drugs as before;
  • for 14 days from the harvest, mineral fertilizing is applied (superphosphate - 20 g, ash - 180 g, water - 10 l), sprayed with drugs (as before);
  • after the crop is harvested, the introduction of organic matter (15 kg of rotted manure under each bush) and mineral fertilizing (ash - 180 g, water - 10 l) is required.

Trimming and shaping bushes

Regular annual pruning can stimulate the active growth of shoots, which has a positive effect on yield indicators.

The crop pruning scheme is as follows:

  1. In the first year of planting in mid-August, the top of the central shoot must be cut off with a sharp secateurs (10-15 cm). After all the leaves have fallen in the fall, 4 buds must be left on the shoot, the extra part must be removed.
  2. In the second year of the growth of the bush, in the autumn period, it is necessary to leave 4 of the strongest shoots on it, count 5 fruit buds on each, and cut off the rest. Excess shoots are removed completely.
  3. In the third year of plant life, in the fall, on each shoot, one young vine should be left with a length of 5 fruit buds, cut off the rest. You also need to remove weak, diseased parts of the plant.
  4. Next, cut the plant every autumn, shortening all shoots by 15–20 cm.

Protection against diseases and pests

Due to the fact that "Pretty Woman" has poor resistance to common diseases, it is necessary to take care of plant protection.

The variety is susceptible to infection:

  • mildew - brown spots on the leaves and shoots, in advanced cases, the mycelium appears on the back of the leaf plate. Disease prevention - regular spraying, for example, "Radomil", according to the instructions;
  • oidium - a light coating on leaves and berries, which leads to damage to the crop, slows the growth of the bush. Preventive spraying with Thanos or Profit will help protect the plant;
  • gray rot is a fungal disease that affects all parts of the plant, so timely prevention is important. Spraying with "Ronilan", "Sumylex" will help to avoid infection.

Wasp is a common pest of grapes, so protecting the crop from spoilage by insects must be done in a timely manner. Special gauze bags that can be purchased at the store will help to solve the problem. They are put on bunches of grapes, thereby protecting the crop from damage by wasps.

To prevent cracking of berries, they monitor the watering regime so that the soil does not get too wet, resort to mulching, apply potassium and phosphorus fertilizers, regularly treat bushes from diseases, especially from gray rot, which can provoke cracking of fruits.

Shelter bushes for the winter

Shelters for wintering need bushes that grow in the northern regions with severe winter frosts, and young seedlings that have not yet managed to form a strong root system.

When pruning is done, the bushes are well watered and allowed to absorb water. The shoots are tied together, tilted as low as possible to the ground and covered with a wooden bracket for fixation. After that, the bush is covered with a film, which is pressed down on all sides by bricks. Soil from the row-spacing is poured over the film - its layer should be at least 15 cm.

Did you know? Grapes are considered the largest crop in the world; more than 10 thousand varieties are currently bred.
