Folk and chemical agents for wasp control

Compared to bees, wasps are not so useful for humans, and in some cases they can create some problems, especially if they settle in a summer cottage or near another dwelling. Fighting them is a difficult but quite productive task, the main thing is to choose the right method of struggle. We offer to learn more about these insects and get acquainted with the main ways to get rid of them on your site.

What is the danger of wasp

The most unpleasant, and sometimes even dangerous consequences of the neighborhood with wasps are painful bites, which are accompanied by a prolonged burning sensation. Most often, a large red spot appears in the contact area with a well-defined puncture site in the center, but if a person is prone to allergic reactions, then the formation of an extensive, slightly swollen area is not excluded.

Once inside the human body, the poison of these insects is able to destroy the walls of cells and affect the nervous system, which is why the wound heals for a long time and is very itchy. The most dangerous are bites in the area of the neck, tongue, face or genitals, and if we are talking about a mass attack, do not exclude the possibility of death.

Typical consequences of mass bites can be the following manifestations:

  • confusion of consciousness;
  • dizziness (sometimes vomiting);
  • pain in the heart;
  • a sharp decrease in blood pressure;
  • temperature increase up to 40 degrees.

Important! A wasp can sting not only with a sting, but also bite with jaws, because of which the bite will be much more painful. However, these insects are not prone to chasing their prey, so they should be afraid only with close contact, mainly on hot summer days (sharp smells will be especially attractive to them).

The most dangerous condition is deservedly considered anaphylactic shock, which sometimes causes death. Neighborhood with wasps is dangerous not only for humans, but also for planted fruit trees, berry bushes. Insects often spoil the crop, causing withering and drying of the fruit. Most of all they suffer from grapes, whose berries can dry whole clusters.

Methods of dealing with wasps in the country

Often, wasps build their nests under the roofs of houses, in wooden sheds or right in the sand, so meeting them is not so difficult. If such a dwelling is found, chemicals, folk recipes or special traps located in the places of the greatest concentration of striped pests will help get rid of it. Consider each of the methods in more detail.

Chemicals

Chemicals almost always give 100% efficiency, but toxic substances are dangerous not only for wasps, but also for other insects or domestic animals, so it is advisable to use such products only as a last resort, especially if the hornet’s nest is located next to a residential building.

The most effective chemicals in this case include:

  • "Troapsil" - effective in combating wasps and other harmful insects;
  • "Karbofos" - regardless of the form of release, in any case, it must be diluted in water;
  • "Delta Zone" - is characterized by a faint smell, therefore it is often used in the preparation of poisoned baits;
  • "Tetrix" is a Dutch drug, which, due to its high toxicity, is recommended for use only by specialists of the relevant services;
  • "Moskitol" - can be used to get rid of insects in non-residential premises, it is supplied in a convenient aerosol form;
  • “Dare” - does not poison the air, in addition to wasps, it also kills cockroaches and ants, while maintaining effectiveness for at least 8 months.

Important! In some cases, wasps do not die immediately, but only after 3–7 days, therefore it is advisable to take a while to re-treat, especially when it comes to highly toxic substances.

When deciding what exactly to poison bored insects with, always consider the proximity of their location to the living quarters. The drug used should be as safe as possible for all residents of the house, so after working with it, carefully wipe all surfaces in contact with the substance, wash your hands and change clothes.

Folk remedies

Folk remedies are not as effective as chemical preparations against insects, but in comparison with the first they are much safer, and for this reason they deserve due attention.

The most common options in this case include the following:

  1. Scale the aspen nest with boiling water (if it is in the ground or in the sand). To distract insects, you can put a saucer with jam nearby, and while striped pests eat it, you can slowly pour hot water into their shelter.
  2. Processing the premises from wasps in early spring using a stove-potbelly stove. If insects were found in a greenhouse, shed or other non-residential premises, then in the center of the building you can put a potbelly stove without putting the pipe on the street. For the furnace fire, it is worth using only spruce and pine branches with fresh needles. The duration of the procedure is 24 hours.
  3. Spraying the curtains with vinegar . The smell of this substance repels insects, which means that they will avoid the processing site.

As an alternative control measure, kerosene is well suited, which is treated not only by the nests themselves, but also by the surface next to them (especially when it comes to earthen wasp houses). True, here the success of the process depends on the depth of impregnation of the substance, therefore, deciding to use this particular agent, it is not worth pity.

Did you know? The body length of the largest wasp in the world is almost 6 cm with a wingspan of 7–7.5 cm. In this case, we are talking about Asian hornet, from which about 40 people die every year from a bite in Japan.

Trap use

With a small number of striped insects, special traps will help get rid of them, which will be especially effective in cases where the nest is very difficult to detect (usually this happens in apiaries, vineyards and orchards).

For the construction of such a simple design, you only need a plastic bottle, a sharp knife, tape and wire, and the process itself will look like this:

  1. Cut the top of the bottle 1/3 of its length.
  2. Pour the bait into the remaining lower part and close it tightly with the cut off upper part, but only with the neck down.
  3. Using a wire, organize a handle, by which you can hang the bottle in the right place or stick tape on it, which can also serve as a good fixer.

Important! The effectiveness of traps placed sometimes depends on their number. The optimal solution is 1 bottle per 100 square meters. m

The principle of operation of such a trap is quite simple: the wasp attracted by the sweet bait gets inside the bottom of the bottle, but can no longer get out. If there are also bees on the site, then when choosing a bait, you should pay attention only to those options that will not attract useful insects - beer, kvass or sour compote. To them you can add any of the above insecticides that help accelerate the death of trapped wasps.

Remove socket

Removing the nest is very likely to save you from wasps in the area, but sometimes it takes a lot of effort to find a shelter for these insects. Therefore, if they often appear in the house, but you cannot find a hive, try to lay out pieces of meat, fish or minced meat on the floor and watch your “guests”. Usually, adults willingly use such food to feed young animals, so they immediately try to take the treats to the nest.

By following them, you will find their home, and then you will only have to get rid of it in one of the following ways:

  1. Flooding nests. This option is largely reminiscent of the previous one, but instead of pouring water from a bucket, you need to bring the container with liquid to the nest and immerse the hornet’s house in it for half an hour. At the end of the process, you can completely remove the nest and treat the places of its attachment with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  2. Gas exposure . If the nest is in a suspended state, you can put a bag on it and through a small hole blow in about half of the Dichlorvos balloon or other similar product. After half an hour, the hornet’s house can be removed, be sure to clean the places of its fastening.

If you do not have Dichlorvos, you can try to remove the hive without it. To do this, simply put a tight bag on the hornet’s house and carefully tie it on top. No openings should remain inside to prevent air from entering. After a few days, the insects inside will suffocate, and the package with the contents can be burned.

It will also be useful for you to read how dangerous a hornet bite is for a person and how to provide first aid.

Whatever method of removal you choose, always remember the safety precautions: be sure to use a tight suit made of dense fabric, cover your face with a net mask (as when working with bees) and try to perform all actions in the dark, when wasps are not as active as in the afternoon. Just in case, you can also provide quick escape routes, suddenly you have to run away from angry insects.

Prevention of occurrence

Unfortunately, once fixed the problem does not mean that wasps do not appear on a private site in the future.

To minimize this likelihood, it is important to adhere to the following preventive requirements:

  1. Regularly inspect all farm buildings and other structures that wasps might like (you will have to be especially careful in spring when insects build their nests). Getting rid of a dozen individuals is much easier than fighting a large swarm.
  2. Periodically treat with a solution of table vinegar all the entrances to the house (window frames and doorways). The smell of the substance will scare away the insects, and they will not fly inside.
  3. Store fruits and berries only in closed places, preventing insects from accessing them. Spoiled instances are especially attractive to them, so try to detect and remove them in a timely manner.
  4. Immediately repair all cracks and gaps in attics and in wooden outbuildings so that insects cannot fly inside.
  5. To protect residential premises during the summer, install mosquito nets on the windows.
  6. Shrubs and trees of valuable varieties can be covered with gauze or special nets that can protect the fruits from overeating and wilting. This is especially true during the period of active fruiting, although you can also cover the bushes during flowering if you wish.

Did you know? The scoli, reaching a length of 5.5 cm, is considered to be the most beautiful wasp. In addition to the traditional black and yellow color, its body also contains blue and violet patches, and the purple wings are especially attractive, which is extremely unusual for such insects.

Robot Safety

Whatever way you decide to get rid of wasps at home, always remember the safety precautions that exclude the possibility of getting bites.

The key requirements in this case will be the following:

  1. Be sure to use a tight suit and a mesh mask on your face (a traditional beekeeper set).
  2. When choosing a processing time, focus on the evening hours when the insects are calmer and definitely located in the nest (at least most of them).
  3. Do not wave your arms and do not tease the wasps, all movements performed must be as clear and coherent as possible, ensuring a quick procedure.
  4. If possible, treat clothing with vinegar or other repellent.
  5. Always tie the bag with the nest removed as tightly as possible, eliminating the slightest possibility of insects flying out.

In the rest, the process of extermination of striped pests is no different from the fight against other flying and land insects, therefore, choosing the most suitable way to destroy them, you can safely proceed to active actions.
