Fencing (bush holder) for gooseberries: types, how to make

Gooseberry itself is not very whimsical, but many who take on its planting, cultivation and care may have problems. Most often they are a consequence of the growth of the bush, when the branches bend to the ground under their own weight. As a result, the bushes acquire an untidy appearance, and the berries can be on the ground, which leads to their spoilage. To avoid such an outcome, many lovers of summer cottage have long since come up with more than one way to deal with these problems.

Types of fencing for gooseberries

To make the bush look neat, and the crop could ripen well and maintain its presentation, gardeners make extensive use of different types of supports for the bushes. They can be made from different materials. Accordingly, the labor and cost of such fences will vary.

From wooden planks

Very easy to manufacture and has a nice appearance. It will take several wooden bars 60–80 centimeters long. The end on one side is sharpened and driven into the ground on different sides of the bush.

Important! To extend the service life, a fence made of wooden beams must be treated with antiseptics or varnished.

Now, wooden strips are screwed onto the racks from above, which will become a support for the branches of gooseberries. Such a bush holder is not labor intensive in its production and does not require special tools other than a hammer and nails.

PVC pipe

Fans of not only accuracy in their area may like the method of fencing with the help of PVC materials. You will need a pipe about four meters long, which must be cut into eight equal parts.

Did you know? Gooseberries contain a lot of vitamin C, so they are used for weakened immunity and vitamin deficiency.

You will also need four corners for connecting pipes. In the future, the algorithm of work does not differ from the above - we place pipes on the sides of the bush (it is advisable to dig them deeper into the ground, since the PVC structures are light weight) so that a square is obtained.

Then, using the remaining pipes and corners, we connect everything into one structure. Fasten the tubes with screws. You can also use an iron to solder propylene pipes.

To further strengthen the construction of PVC, some gardeners use fiberglass composite reinforcement, which is pulled through the holes made in the supports. Also for this purpose, you can use a single-core wire in a single insulation. The diameter of the first or second is about 4–5 mm.

From metal

It is the most durable and expensive. But it's worth it - the bush holder will last for many years and at the same time will delight the eye with its aesthetics. Due to the difficulty in manufacturing it can only be bought on specialized sites or ordered from familiar craftsmen.

But if you want to do the work yourself and think that you can do it, then the algorithm is similar to building a support from metal-plastic pipes. You will need a piece of metal stick, which will need to be cut into several parts.

Two will go to the construction of the hoop, which can be bent using home tools. Another three or four pieces will go on the role of legs. They will need to be welded to the outer or inner part of the hoops, thus constructing a strong frame.

You can also go in a simpler way - just cut the metal into eight equal rods, four of which need to be stuck into the ground near the bush, and the supports should be connected using the welding machine.

From plastic pipes

It is considered one of the most reliable and beautiful, but requires more energy than the fences described above.

Important! To give resistance to the fence, it is recommended to drive metal pegs into the ground, on which polypropylene pipes then need to be planted.

There are two main ways to create a fence:

  1. You will need a metal-plastic pipe, self-tapping screws, a piece of flexible hose, wooden sticks of small thickness (at least three), a hammer, a hacksaw and a screwdriver. Two circles of the same diameter are formed from metal pipes. The ends of the pipes are connected with a rubber hose 10-15 cm long. In the future, you need to do a stand for hoops. For this, legs 60–80 centimeters in length are cut from the same metal-plastic pipes. The minimum necessary for normal stability is three. But you can take four to five. Next, you need to insert wood into the supports. Then they put the first hoop on top, and with the help of screws they screw it to wooden poles in the supports. It will be on horseback. Now the second hoop comes into play. Supports are pushed into it from the lower end, the hoop is fixed at a height of about five centimeters from the ground. The hoop must be screwed to the supports through pipes.
  2. For this method, you need the same metal-plastic pipe 1.5–2 meters long, several polypropylene pipes (50–60 centimeters long), tees, and a rubber hose 10–15 centimeters. A metal hoop is also made from metal plastic, the ends of which are connected with a rubber hose. Polypropylene tubes will serve as struts. You need to solder the tees to them, with which then the tubes will need to be evenly attached to the hoop.

Of wooden pegs and twine

Around the gooseberry bush you need to drive a minimum of four wooden pegs. Above the ground, they should rise by about 0.5 meters. If you look from above or from the side, it will look like gooseberries were taken in a square.

Now, picking up the twine (you can replace it with twine or wire), we begin to carefully wind it around the pegs, while raising the gooseberry branches with your hand. The twine is located at a height of about five centimeters from the top of the pegs. After finishing work, the resulting design will resemble a box without walls.

Primitive of twigs and ropes

You need to find four branches of a staghorn about a meter high, but not higher. We drive them in such a way that we get a square. We tie the branches with a rope for the fortress of the structure. We put the heaviest branches of the plant on the stalks.

Umbrella holder system

If the above-described supports for gooseberry bushes have a similar appearance, then this design is very different from them, because a completely different principle of support and fencing of the bush is used. A long stick of round or rectangular shape is driven in near the rhizome.

Drive in carefully so as not to damage the roots of the plant. As a material, both wood and iron are suitable. A metal ring should be nailed or welded on top of the support.

In the future, you need to run the thread through the ring (preferably using a thick twine), the ends of which then need to be tied around the branches of a gooseberry bush. You can tie all the branches, but you can limit yourself only to the heaviest ones, which, under the weight of the fruits, are strongly inclined to the ground.

For those who may be concerned about the preservation of the bark and the absence of mechanical damage due to friction, you can use this method - cut transverse 10-15-cm pieces of rubber from a car tire.

Holes of sufficient diameter are then made at the ends of such strips so that twine can be passed through them, with which you are going to tie the gooseberry. Then we put the branches of the plant on these stripes so that they wrap it, and through the holes we pass the rope, which we then fix on the ring.

Did you know? Kiwi is a distant relative of gooseberries. It is the berries from this bush that, due to cultivation and selection, have turned into a “hairy” fruit that is familiar to many.

Fences and stands for gooseberries will help you keep the plant in order, give it a cultivated look and protect yourself from rotting fruits. If you are an inexperienced gardener, then there is no need to be afraid - a bush holder with the right tools is easy enough to make, even if you haven't got a hand in it yet. But the result of such efforts will be a pleasant sight for a well-groomed garden.
