Aphids on viburnum: methods of struggle

Kalina has long been known for its healing properties, because its berries have a whole range of vitamins, micro and macro elements and other beneficial substances. That is why this culture is easy to meet in almost every household plot or garden. However, having absolute unpretentiousness in leaving, this plant is subject to attack by various pests, and the aphid is the most widespread of them. Consider below the main methods that can quickly and effectively help get rid of aphids, while maintaining plant health and yield.

Methods of dealing with aphids on viburnum

Among the main means of controlling aphids, both chemical preparations are used, which are more effective, but affect the crop and require material costs, as well as folk recipes.

Did you know? Due to its composition, viburnum is able to remove radioactive isotopes from the body, and therefore these berries are necessary in the daily diet of people who work in hazardous industries.

The choice remains with the gardener and depends on the degree of damage to the plant.

Celandine against aphids

Celandine refers to plants, which contain many toxic substances - in addition to bitterness and alkaloids, it contains organic acids and essential oils.

Important! Despite its natural origin, celandine is a plant insecticide, and therefore can cause allergic reactions. When processing plants with formulations that include this component, it is recommended to use personal protective equipment (gloves, mask or respirator, glasses, etc.).

All these components have a detrimental effect on pests, and therefore celandine is often used in the fight against insects:

  1. As infusions - 4 kg of celandine (all parts of the plant) is crushed and poured with a bucket of hot water, after which the solution is infused for several hours in a room protected from sunlight. Then the mixture is filtered and poured into a spray bottle, with which all infected viburnum fragments are processed.
  2. Broths - fresh or slightly dried celandine is chopped with secateurs and placed in a bucket (1/5 part), after which it is poured with water and put on fire. After the mixture boils, the container is covered with a lid, and the broth itself is infused for half an hour and filtered. The resulting solution is sprayed with all infected parts of the tree.
  3. Mulching - the celandine is dug out together with the rhizome and chopped, after which the soil is sprinkled with the resulting raw material on the trunk circle. Thus, a certain barrier is formed, which does not allow ants that settle aphids to the leaves of the plant.

Ammonia from aphids

Ammonia (ammonia) has long been used by experienced gardeners as a natural fertilizer, increasing the level of nitrogen in the soil. However, this drug has another indispensable property - its pungent odor and ability to intoxication are widely used by gardeners in pest control. And thanks to the ability to quickly remove from the leaf cover and parallel top dressing of the whole plant, ammonia can be used at any stage of the growing season (flowering, the formation of ovaries, fruiting).

Did you know? In order to get rid of the bitter aftertaste in the berries, viburnum should be frozen.

When preparing drugs for pest control, ammonia does not act as an independent element, but always paired with the so-called “adhesive”, which can be used as laundry soap, shampoo or dishwashing detergent.

To prepare the solution, you need 40 ml of 10% ammonia and grated laundry soap (bar) per 10 l of water - this whole plant is sprayed with this mixture, affected by the invasion of aphids.

Folk remedies

For the treatment of viburnum in gardens, folk pest control agents are often used.

The most effective of them are:

  • soap solution - about 10 grams of laundry soap or ordinary washing powder is diluted in 10 liters of water, after which the bush or the tree of viburnum is treated with the product (2-3 times in 7–9 days);
  • ash solution - in 10 l of hot water 250–300 g of ash is added, after which the solution is boiled for half an hour and combined with 50 g of laundry soap;
  • infusion on potato tops - 1 kg of chopped young potato tops is poured with hot water and infused for several hours (viburnum is treated with infusion until the aphids completely disappear);
  • tobacco solution - 250-300 g of tobacco is infused in a half bucket of water for several days, after which the solution is half diluted with water;
  • chamomile infusion - 1 kg of dried flowers is infused in a bucket of water for 12–13 hours (when spraying a bush, 1/3 of the infusion is diluted with three parts of water);
  • infusion of black belena - 0.5 kg of inflorescences of the plant and its roots or 1 kg of the aboveground part is infused in 10 l of water for 12 hours (before processing the viburnum, an additional 50 g of laundry soap is dissolved in the prepared infusion);
  • garlic infusion - 300 g of chopped garlic (any part) is infused in 10 l of water for 20-24 hours, after which the mixture is filtered and then used for spraying;
  • a solution of wormwood - in 10 l of water, 1 kg of chopped wormwood is boiled over low heat for about 30 minutes, after which the product is filtered, mixed with grated soap and used to treat diseased fragments of the plant;
  • red pepper infusion - 50 g of red pepper (1 sachet) is poured into 1 liter of boiled water and infused for several hours, after which it is combined with soap shavings and used in spraying.

How to get rid of aphids during flowering

During the flowering period of viburnum, like almost all other crops, the use of chemical-based treatments is highly not recommended, since they extend their toxic properties not only to aphids, but also to other insects, including bees. Accordingly, in order to avoid loss of yield, exclusively gentle means of control should be used. For example, a solution of liquid ammonia has good efficiency, which, due to its properties, allows you to combine two procedures at once at a time: spraying to combat aphids and foliar nitrogen top dressing.

Important! When spraying, special attention should be paid to the lower part of the plant - this is where most pests are located.

The invasion of aphids on viburnum is a fairly common phenomenon. However, there are many drugs that can quickly and effectively combat these pests, minimizing crop losses and plant health. Most often, folk remedies are used, since they not only do not adversely affect the crop and the environment, but also avoid unplanned costs for special preparations.
